For years, Apple’s iPhone design has put the company on a pedestal due to the degree of comfort and usability it brought to users. While the shift from the iPhone 5 to the iPhone 5s saw little to no changes design-wise with the same 4-inch screen, reports are already brewing that the next handset, dubbed as iPhone 6, will feature a 4.8-inch display.
In a Verizon report, the 4.8-inch screen Apple handset is possible as Jefferies & Co. Analyst said that the Cupertino camp is “getting more favorable price rates from its component suppliers.” Misek added that Apple is likely to add an extra row of column, while retaining the normal aspect ratio of 16:9.
What other features can we expect from the larger screen of iPhone? Let’s find out.
The iPhone 6 display and form, as of recent reports
Current reports said that the mobile giant is currently toying with a couple of interesting patents, which may have a significant implication on the future device. Here are some of the reported forms:
Quantum dot display
Apple is ready for a Quantum dot (QD) display to complement their signature Retina screen. This technology has the ability to improve color reproduction, to make visuals more natural. In a TechCrunch report, QD uses smaller components to fine-tune emitted light. It was also reported to be easier and less expensive to manufacture in various sizes.
Wraparound Sapphire Glass
The next patent combines two elements: a wraparound display and a Sapphire glass. Since it’s a combination of both, the design features various shapes: a tube and a cylinder (oval, cross-sectional, or triangular figure). Reportedly, the hollow part will house the handset’s hardware, finished with a cap structure at the end of both points.
In-cell display
Meanwhile, there are also reports saying that the next generation Apple smartphone will sport a different display technology. Dubbed as the In-cell display, this patent hints a relatively thinner form factor, while signaling a bigger device.
Potential Drawbacks
While these patents give credence to the Cupertino camp’s “forward thinking” strategy, it can’t be denied that they have their own share of pitfalls.
Quantum dot
While the use of QD is not yet adopted by most mobile companies, Bright Hub Engineering notes that problems may show in the manufacturing and application stages. The production of blue QD requires a different approach, as it needs smaller sizes of dots for the human eye to detect signals.
Wraparound
The problem with a curved screen is that it can be the only novelty to attract the consumers. It shows a clear disadvantage in overall comfort and usability, featuring almost identical to flat screen devices.
In-cell
Because a thin display is basically a fusion of thin sheets and plastics, the issue of durability and short life span are still apparent. Aside from the expensive manufacturing, blue films have a shorter life span of 14,000 hours, as opposed to the red and green ones which can last from 46,000 to 230,000 hours.
Advantages
Despite the shortcomings, the advantages of these form factors seem to outweigh the drawbacks.
Quantum dot
In terms of vivid colors, QD is considered as the next generation display technology. Aside from mobile phones, it proves its versatility by being mounted on flat-panel TV screens, cameras, and gaming consoles.
Wraparound
According to Techie News, the biggest benefit of having a wraparound form factor is the ability to read larger documents, without the need to turn pages. Also, this type of display employs a backside gesture, making it easier to flip iBook pages and change volume.
In-cell
An In-cell display would make the “larger iPhone” suited for video streaming, as it speeds up the response time for under a millisecond. It also sports superb brightness, as all of the light emitted by the thin films are reflected and not wasted.
Whether we’ll see a quantum dot, a wraparound, or an In-cell form factor, Apple is only after one thing – to increase consumer satisfaction with their cutting-edge technology. Right now, all we need to do is wait and see where Tim Cook’s leadership will take us.
